Similarly to the importance of pronouncing someone’s name correctly, it’s common courtesy to refer to someone correctly as well. This does not require more background, and often assumed. But if you do have opportunity to know, then it is your responsibility to respect it.

As non-binary people, Danny and Orem don’t relate to masculine or feminine gender identities. Because of this, referring to them in gendered verbiage (like he or she) loses the opportunity for connection and respect.

Both Orem and Danny are referred to with THEY/THEM/THEIRS pronouns. For example, “Look at Dan, they’re looking dapper in their bolo tie”. Another, “Orem is over there, can you see them? I love their smile, they’re so happy!”

This is because both Orem and Danny are nonbinary people, meaning they’re gender non-conforming and are referred to androgynously/gender-neutrally.

On their special day, Danny and Orem are looking forward to being celebrated and have invited guests who have happily participated in their life story. If you notice guests refer to them wrong, we don’t expect it to be intentional - however it can be just as impactful.

As guests, we ask that you politely correct others if you notice them refer to the newly-weds wrong.

“Let’s refer to them as they’ve asked us to”, or “Hey, Dan uses they if you could refer to them that way, thanks”
